So you want to scale your business and finally make enough money to quit your 9-5. You know exactly what you need to do each night to push work forward, but the minute you get on your home computer you feel like you’re pulled in a million different directions– those shiny objects (read: other business owners freebies), challenges, private messages and questions in your own group have grabbed your attention. And 20 minutes later you realize that you only actually gave yourself an hour tonight to work on your business (boundaries!) so you either need to decide between cutting the time you get to netflix with your other half or, sigh, cutting your business growth time short for the third time this week. Business focus is tough, isn’t it?
Why can’t you just be more focused. I mean, what’s wrong with you?
Nothing is wrong with you. Nothing. Let’s not use this above scenario to bring in fears and lack of confidence in your abilities. Every single piece of information we use on the internet had someone develop it so that it’s always grabbing our attention. Think of push notifications, numbers bolded in red, pop ups, videos that automatically load, catchy advertising. You’re really at a loss the minute you open your favourite social media app. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still focus on what you need to do to propel your business forward with the little time you have. You just need to be SUPER strategic about it.
Once I found ways to give myself more business focus I was a content and consistency QUEEN. You can read more about how important consistency is here. Literally no one can figure out how I am able to get so much done in my business in such a short amount of time. And while I’d love to believe that it’s just something about Sara I’d be completely lying to you. I used to spend hours on Instagram totally drooling over other people’s dream lives instead of creating my own. And yes, I once signed up for every freebie I possibly could so that I could learn *all the things* rather than actually working on all the things that would make my business grow! Trust me when I say that your ability to focus on your work is paramount to your business success. You MUST be providing value and personal outreach to your community if you want to make an impact and an income. Here are 3 tools I’ve found that are crucial to keep focused on getting shit done in your online business.
3 Tools for More Business Focus
The Pomodoro Technique
If you haven’t heard of the pomodoro technique I suggest you Google it. Quite like the little kitchen tomato your grandma used to use to time her cooking, there are online pomodoros to time your content creation into tasty time chunks. Research shows that our brains are the most productive in the first 20-25 minutes of doing one task. Pomodoro timers give you 25 minutes to focus on a task followed by a 5 minute break. They are incredible for getting work done since your brain is automatically tricked into believing that you have a deadline. There are a few different pom apps you can use for this and even some simple ones you can do straight out of a web browser. Give it a shot– this is my favourite tool for when I feel like I’m procrastinating too much on my work. Remember– you’re here to make an impact spend your time working towards just that!
The Mindfulness Bell
One of my friends in my Master’s program had his watch beep every single hour. Every evening during our coffee & cram sessions we’d all look up at each other when his watch beeped and say ALREADY? It’s crazy how much a break in your thought process can help you to put time into perspective. The mindfulness bell is based off of a tibetan sound bowl that rings simultaneously throughout the day, causing you to reflect on what you’re doing in that very moment and if you’re even being mindful of it! I can’t even begin to tell you how many times my mindfulness bell has creeped up on me while I’m scrolling through Instagram only to realize that I’ve been on the app for the past 15 minutes. You can download the app on IOS or Android. Just remember to think FOCUS every time you hear the bell so that you can get back to doing the things that light you up, or at least stop doing the subconscious things you do on a daily basis that just don’t serve you.
Moment
This one is all about boundaries. You don’t necessarily need an app to help kick you off of Facebook but if you feel like you have no willpower you might want to give it a go! Try to limit your time on Facebook (including reading comments and questions from your tribe) to 20-30 minutes every day. I know it’s hard but eventually it will free up so much of your time and will help keep you from being triggered by any comparison traps or fears you find yourself in as you mindlessly click through other people’s posts. Apps like moment help to keep you off of your phone and certain applications on it so that you have more time to do what really matters to you– like get that content done so that you can cozy up to your bae rather than explain to them that you need to work for another hour before you deserve a break.
PS– Want to start bringing in the right people into your community, grow your list like crazy and finally get fully booked? Check out my Fully Booked in 30 Days Checklist here.
The more business focus you create, the more you’re going to be able to devote time to the things that really matter when it comes to growing and scaling to your first 5k+ month. Let me know which one of these apps you’re dying to try in the comments below!
